Like it or not, your business runs on words.

Woman's hands typing (Developmental editing services for solo and small business owners at http://erinkurup.com/services/)It runs on writing. On a voice that is unique to you and only you. On a verbal fingerprint, if you will.

As a solo entrepreneur in the online space, writing is part of your job.

How do you show your right people what you’re all about? With the words on your website.

How do you capture your best ideas and send them out into the world, where they can make a difference? By writing an ebook or info product.

How do you let the readers you created the book for know it’s for them? By writing a sales page.

But not every business owner is a writer first and foremost. You probably have other strengths that shine a little brighter. (Or a lot brighter.)

That’s ok. That’s why I’m here.

Have you worked with me before? Does my reputation precede me? Stranger things have happened… Click here to skip to the part about how we work together. (Only if you want to.)

You don’t have to consider yourself an author to make an impact with your voice.

I believe that down to my toes. It’s why I do what I do, easing the creation process for business owners like you, whose sweet spots lie elsewhere.

And more than believing, I know it’s true. Over and over, my clients say to me, “I don’t think of myself as an author, but when I work with you, I’m so proud of my writing.”

I want you to have that experience, too.

When you think of an editor, what image comes to mind?

Your picky, grouchy tenth grade English teacher? A red-pen-wielding grammar nut forcing you to follow arcane rules you’ve never heard of? Your (not-so-web-savvy) mom?

Lucky for you, I’m none of those. I’m quite nice. (Just ask my clients.) I’d rather you be clear and consistent than follow rules you’ve never heard of to the letter. I’ve been a part of the blogging world since 2008 and run my own business completely online, which takes care of the web-savvy bit. Plus, I don’t even own any red pens. (Purple is way more my style.)

But the biggest difference between that image in your head and real-life me is this: What I do is about so much more than whether you used “their” when you meant “there” or forgot to close a quote. Because fixing that surface stuff without looking at what’s going on underneath? That’s like putting a pretty shade of lipstick on a grubby barnyard pig.

The work of editing, of making something written truly great, begins at a deeper level.

It begins with structure, order, organization. With making sure the thing you’re writing matches the needs of the audience you want it to serve. With building a solid foundation that carries your message straight to the people you’re writing it for.

It’s about taking your written raw materials and helping you transform them into your best vision, your highest aspirations for them, from the ground up. No compromises. No cutting corners. That means I:
Post-it notes laid out on a desk (Developmental editing services for solo and small business owners at http://erinkurup.com/services/)

  • Help you lay a solid foundation on which to build your creation
  • Make sure we build from a plan that lines up with the finished masterpiece you’re envisioning
  • Keep your intentions and your audience at the forefront and shape our work accordingly
  • Watch for parts that hook together and things that don’t line up, then come up with ways to get all the strings humming together in harmony
  • Preserve your voice and writing style as we reorganize and refine
  • Smooth the rough edges, get fussy about how your message is delivered, and help you hone all the details that make a project truly great

(In technical terms, I offer my own special blend of developmental editing, line editing, and light copyediting. If technical is your thing, you can read about it here.)

You end up with the site copy or digital product you’ve been longing for. And the best part? It sounds just like you, because you’re the one who wrote it.

Some editors sell their services by the page, word, hour, or round. My approach is a little different.

With websites, I bundle my services in flat-rate packages. With digital products, I build a custom package suited to each individual project.

Why?

I believe in a holistic approach to editing. When we work together, I’m all in. I’m not counting my hours, and I don’t want you to worry about counting your words. Reducing your precious project to a pile of its constituent parts is stressful for us both and unfair to your creation.

I want you to have everything your project needs right up front. I want you to feel like you’re getting more than you paid for, every single time we collaborate. I’m here to take the stress out of editing, not to pile on a helping of my own.

And as a bonus, you’ll know exactly how much the project will cost before we’ve so much as edited a word.

So what does all of this look like when it comes to your specific project?

Our work together comes in two flavors. What will we be working on?

Digital Products

Digital products — ebooks, info products, courses, manifestos, you name it — are the mainstays of so many online businesses. They’re vessels for your best ideas. They carry your knowledge to the people who need it. They help you build your body of work, your legacy.

They’re also daunting. Believe me, I know. How do you translate your message into a form that will reach your right people best? How do you stay true to the vision you carry in your mind? How do you put together a cohesive whole instead of a jumble of mismatched parts? Where do you even begin?

Before your eyes glaze over, before you change the subject, before you go back to fiddling with your sidebar or checking Facebook, hear me out.

It’s time to make this thing happen. You know it is.

Don’t worry. We’ve got this.

Having Erin edit my book has been a transformative process: not just for my book, which is now way better than it ever could have been on its own, but for me as a writer. Erin’s style of working helped me become a better writer through the editing process because she explains why she makes the changes that she does.

“Aside from all the technical stuff, I felt extremely confident that Erin ‘got’ my book, so I was able to trust her excellent ideas around fleshing out ideas and making the book stronger in general. I’ll never put out another book without working with Erin!”

Webpages & Blog Posts

Your website is more than just a bunch of pages and posts. It’s the heart of your business and the voice your right people respond to. And the guest posts you send out into the world? They’re emissaries for your brand, calling people back to your home base. No wonder feeling out of sync with your web-based writing sucks so much.

If you’re struggling to rebrand your business, trying to write copy for a new website, or wondering what feels off every time you open your homepage, you’re in the right place. Ditto if that important post for your blog or someone else’s just isn’t coming out right. I’m all about making your pages and posts say what you want them to say, to the people you want to say it to, in a way that sounds — and feels — just like you.

You choose the pages (or posts) and we’ll make them shine so bright you’ll be over-the-moon proud to send them out into the world.
